Lunar Eclipse

Bryan, Bradley and I woke up at 11:50pm last night to see the total lunar eclipse. Earlier in the evening the sky was very clear, but when "totality" occurred we could only catch glimpses through the patchy cloud cover. I got on the radio with some fellow hams who were having similar experiences, but eventually we all got to see the coffee-stained coppery moon. Cool.

This is what happens when I try some long range archery (70 yards!). I happened to strike the end of the 1 inch x 1 inch METAL support frame for the bale. (The steel tip should be pointed!) The frame rang like a bell!




I've been trying my hand at drawing again. I've always been able to draw inanimate objects, but live subjects always look terrible. I got a book that I hope is going to help me with that.

Long Weekend

I took Friday off for Flourish and so have just completed a 3 day weekend, but it was very busy. I had a chance to rest some but mostly was very busy. The Flourish event went well, but I was initially disappointed with the web video. Bad audio, because I could NOT get the DV audio into the feed. Everytime I tried I crashed my browser. I'm gonna have to find a better solution this week. Emily helped me get a better perspective on it all though, and I appreciated that.

Gonne go to sleep early now, so I can keep up my exercise and archery time in the morning.

End of the world?

Hi Everyone,

Well, we had Hurricane Flossie approach the island, then fizzle. We had a 5.0 earthquake on the Big Island as a Waialua brushfire surged out of control and burned 6700 acres on the north shore of Oahu. Then Lima, Peru had a 7.5 - 8.0 earthquake which triggered a tsunami advisory here (later cancelled). Then this morning, another 4.0 earthquake on the Big Island, all during a recent surge in the lava flow at the Pu'u O'o vent, part of a 20 year ongoing eruption.

What is going on here?

We're fine. For all of that, life seems pretty much the same as usual here. Kids have started school, I've restarted archery and exercising, and Bryan is continuing his swimming classes. We are blessed.

Cool thunderhead I watched developing for a good 30 minutes in traffic. I just watched its peak roil higher and higher, up to nearly 12,000 feet! The Waianae range is 4000 feet high at its peak.



Bryan's sleep-over party. They spent an hour and a half setting up this Heroscape game, and didn't even play!



Father and son splinters! Mine was the smaller one! I got mine doing yard work (the honorable way!) We don't know how Bryan got his, or why he waited a day to complain about it!



Early morning Thursday at the archery range. A nice tight group from 30 yards. Could still be tighter though! 9 arrows here. I tore a vane on one of them, but successfully repaired it a few hours later at work. I can now "fletch" my own arrows!

Wow...The inventor of the World Wide Web

OK, I know that this may seem silly, but I am actually very excited. For you to understand my excitement, you need a short history lesson about the WorldWideWeb: (Courtesy Wikipedia)

While an independent contractor at CERN from June to December 1980, Tim Berners-Lee proposed a project based on the concept of hypertext, to facilitate sharing and updating information among researchers.^[2] With help from Robert Cailliau, he published a more formal proposal for the World Wide Web.^[3]

A NeXTcube was used by Berners-Lee as the world's first web server and also to write the first web browser, WorldWideWeb in 1990. By Christmas 1990, Berners-Lee had built all the tools necessary for a working Web:^[4] the first Web browser (which was a Web editor as well), the first Web server and the first Web pages^[5] which described the project itself.

On August 6, 1991, he posted a short summary of the World Wide Web project on the alt.hypertext newsgroup^[6]. This date also marked the debut of the Web as a publicly available service on the Internet.

That website is STILL on the net. You can see it here: The First Webpage.

In the photo above, do you see the sticker on the CPU? It says "This machine is a server. DO NOT POWER DOWN!!". Back then, if you unplugged the computer, you unplugged the World Wide Web! Wow!

Anyways, I wrote a simple, somewhat silly email to Tim Berners-Lee Monday just to say thanks for the web. I wrote:

Archery again

After a long absence, I finally got back to the archery range again. I had taken some time off when my left forearm started hurting because of a "repetitive-use" injury (due to ham-radio, not archery). I stopped my early morning archery visits AND my gym visits until it healed. Guess its time to get back to the gym too, huh?

Our weekend felt very long! Bryan and Bradley had a bunch of friends over for an end of summer sleepover. They pretty much entertained themselves and I know Bryan and Bradley had a great time! Man, those kids love their computer games!

I tried going to 'Seattle's Best' today for a chai, rather than Starbucks. Blech. I'm sorry to say this is the first chai that I did not thoroughly enjoy. The spice in the tea seems to burn my throat, almost like a pepper. What's up with that? Nope, I still prefer Starbucks creamy smooth chai.

Monday. Blech. Mondays always ruin my weekends.

"Live streaming" church worked!

Hi Everyone!

We had our first test of streaming our church's video "live" onto the
net and it went pretty well, and the results were recorded too! You

You'll see the video is highly compressed and sometimes freezes.
Rarely the audio freezes. Overall it IS what I expected from the
technology. Remember, we are doing this without spending a penny!
If we want to look better, we are going to need to invest in some
serious equipment, but honestly I think it is pretty acceptable as
is. We might be able to create a little more stability by using a
new, more powerful laptop (next week!). I'd love to hear your
thoughts regarding its "watchability".

A couple of other notes: We stop recording when the message starts
(we have not secured rights for rebroadcasting the DVD) You can grab
the slider and move it to any portion of the clip. (You don't have
to finish the fist song to listen to the second).

Once we have it running predictably, we will publicize it and put the
link on the webpage.

Legal Dept. Snafu....

I've been told that I am not allowed to netcast the message portion of our service on Sunday because we are showing a DVD, and we don't have the rights to netcast it, so no sermon on Sunday. I still plan on trying the technology out some to see what will work, but I'll have to shut the feed off for the message. I still hope someone tries to view what we put up. The chatroom will work through it all, whether I'm broadcasting or not.

I'm just telling you, my loyal and trusted bunch of readers, that I will be trying something new this Sunday at church. I am going to attempt to "netcast" our services live on the internet! There's no guarantee it will work this first time, but in case it DOES, it would be nice to have a few friends there watching! There's also a related chat room that you can say hi and I can reply.
